working you into a lather

Happy Sunday!

This week, we’ll go back to an earlier exercise and modify it just a little bit.

Remember doing this? Great!

Now, one character has a hideous cold. Don’t change the characters, relationships, objectives, or other obstacles, but rewrite your scene to include this additional obstacle.

How does it affect that character? the other character? the situation? their relationship? So many questions you might ask, both retroactive and moving forward, such as: When this sort of conflict arises, does this character habitually get sick? or pretend to? or? or? or?

You may think this has nothing to do with your scene/characters/play (if you’ve gotten that far), but even if this exercise gets turfed before the final draft, it will reveal things you’d never have found otherwise.

You’re welcome.
