kudos and girlcotts

As we’ve learned from recent social upheavals, the world has turned into an aggregation of villages.  Everybody in your small town knows – or thinks they know – your business, and in the same way the Internet is interweaving many small towns all over the world, for the good.  Yes, also for the petty, but that’s not the story on which I’m focusing.

The lack of gender parity in professional theater isn’t news, any more, but it will only continue to change if we continue to open our mouths and work our keyboards.

The International Centre for Women Playwrights– for which I have the great good fortune to serve on the Board of Directors – is launching the ICWP 50/50 Applause Award, which will recognize theaters whose seasons have included productions of at least 50% female playwrights.

Conversely, Guerilla Girls publish their girlcott list, theaters that produce no female playwrights in a given season.   But, they also publish a Good News list (scroll down to Good News).

So here’s to shaking out that rug!
